‘I am finding my path’: A case study of Swedish novice physical education teachers’ experiences when managing the realities and challenges of their first years in the profession

Novice teachers face several challenges during their first years of socialization in schools, often feeling unprepared managing the full range teaching duties. If teacher retention and attrition are to be improved, research on difficulties encountered by novice diverse contexts cultures is required. There a lack studies regarding physical education (PE) teachers’ induction processes, especially outside Anglophone countries. The aim this study was, from an occupational perspective, examine how Swedish PE experience, perceive manage process. Through single-case design with embedded multiple units analysis, we interviewed eight teachers. Based thematic results show that experience related reality shock, marginalization isolation induction. We identified three approaches used novices as central successfully context: (1) socializing into community colleagues, (2) performing role health promoter (3) maintaining critical perspective. conclude these relies heavily individual, therefore argue process could further facilitated formal organizational support. This paper confirms long-standing reported other countries, contributes new knowledge when contextually dependent due social political surroundings education.
